The Gulls will be gunning for more FA Cup glory against Burnley after disposing of Second Division side Northampton at Park Lane.
Neil Gregory - who snatched the winner in last year's FA Trophy final - was the goal hero again today as Canvey Island paid scant regard to their status as non-league soccer minnows, and pulled off a magnificent victory against theoretically-superior opposition.
Gregory's 48th-minute strike resulted from one of the few flowing moves in a scrappy but passionate match.
Northampton had the better of a goalless first half but Julian Dicks and the rest of the Canvey defence were on top of their game.
Northampton striker Marco Gabbiadini came closest to scoring for the visitors in the second half but his close-range shot was blocked and then scrambled away.
Now the intrepid Gulls face a trip to Burnley, who currently sit at the top of the Nationwide First Division. No-one will expect the Gulls to win, and that will suit Canvey Island just fine.
- Southend United will have a home tie against another First Division side, Tranmere Rovers, if they can overcome Chesterfield in a second round replay at Roots Hall next week
